Analysing Award Winning Dance Music Videos

 MTV Video Music Award for Best Dance Video 2008 Winner -- When I grow up by the Pussycat Dolls Very colourful video Its a video of the Girl group dancing on stationary cars and walking down a street looking strong. There is lots of close up shots & shots looking either down on the girls or a view from the ground upwards which promotes the girl group and shows them as very powerful. 2010 Winner -- Bad Romance by Lady Gaga shows the artist throughout the video/ to promote her. Lots of costume change and set change. Quite a dark set not colourful. 2012 Winner -- Feel so close by Calvin Harris Has a montage feel to it as it has lots of different little clips. Shows the artist through the video in little clips singing the song. Not as bring and colourful as some of the past winners. 2016 Winner -- How deep is your love by Calvin Harris & Disciples Lots more editing/colourful/good editing & some montage clips. Music video demonstrate certain genre characteristics. Music videos more often than not tend to include a demonstration of typical genre characteristics For example: a video of a stage performance is typical for a metal video, a dance routine typical for a boy/girl band and bikini clad women by a pool and flashy sports cars in a rap video Music videos can also link to film genres, this is know as intertextuality. e.g. Many heavy rock songs are influenced by horror films 2.
